It has been quite a year and a new learning experience for all of us as we deal with the realities of Covid-19. We had programs set for the 20-21 year only to realize that this dreaded disease is not going away quickly and that alternative plans needed to be made.
I want to acknowledge the women who have served on the 2019-20 Board – some for longer than one year – and are now taking a respite. Every year there is rotation, with some members moving up from Assistant to “chief,” or changing jobs, and new members coming on.

Thanks to the Ohio Valley crew I found an organic weed killer spray that torches these “woodland orchids,” the weed that’s been appearing in our gardens for the last few years.
Hot off the press! The GCA is taking advantage of social distancing requirements by offering all club members a series of exciting opportunities to learn and grow.
The GCA has just notified us of the death of Shirley Meneice, a GCA stalwart whose name is on the Shirley Meneice Horticultural Conference held each fall. Her daughter sent the following letter:
Lauren Miller, a teacher of Environmental Education at the Birchwood School of Hawken outside of Cleveland, Ohio, has received the prestigious Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award, given by the GCA to an individual who, “through working with children under 16 years of age in horticulture and the environment, has inspired their appreciation of the beauty and fragility of our planet.”

It’s time to vote for the Peoples’ Choice Photography Contest, Celebrating the Shaker Lakes, with photos taken by members of Shaker Lakes Garden Club and The Village Garden Club, in commemoration of Shaker Lakes Garden Club’s 100th year in GCA and Village Garden Club’s 90th year since its founding.
My vegetable seedlings, lovingly started in March, are ready to plant. The containers await filling with beautiful flowers and herbs. And, the weeds are poking up from the earth as fast as they can. Before I head outdoors, I would like to thank you.
Margaret Krudy and Susannah Doman, Floral Design Co-Chairs are excited to announce the Zone X Fall 2020 Floral Design Workshop Courses! This event is presented by The Akron Garden Club, The Cleveland Garden Club and The Shaker Lakes Garden Club.
The final distribution of the 2019-2020 Charitable Projects Fund of $20,150 supported seven northeast Ohio projects, highlighting numerous club interests: urban beautification, food gardening education, reduction of invasive species, and recycling and repurposing floral arrangements, to name a few.
