A Sad Farewell
SLGC
The GCA has just notified us of the death of Shirley Meneice, a GCA stalwart whose name is on the Shirley Meneice Horticultural Conference held each fall. Her daughter sent the following letter:
Dear Friends of Shirley Meneice,
It is with deep sadness that I write to let you know that my sweet mother, Shirley, passed away on Thursday, July 16 just shy of her 97th birthday. She started feeling poorly only a few days before she passed. I was fortunate to be with her for the past three weeks, the first two self-quarantining with her because she spent time with someone who unknowingly had the virus. My mom was tested for COVID-19 and the results came back negative.
She was an amazing lady, and she will be sorely missed. However, I am comforted knowing that she left us with her head held high and a lifetime of achievements doing the many things she loved. Her wonderful friendships kept her happy, engaged and looking forward to each day. What a great life she lived!
Per her request, there will be no services. Should you wish, sow a seed, propagate a plant, or dig in the dirt. That would make my mom and me happy. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Garden Club of America Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference Fund, Carmel-by-the-Sea Garden Club, Center for Plant Conservation, UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden, League of Women Voters, Connecticut College, or the organization of your choice.
Kind regards,
Peggy Meneice
