The 2022/23 GCA Scholarship winners will not be announced for another few weeks, when their contracts have all been signed and confirmed. But I have it on good authority that once again Zone X has performed brilliantly!
During the Covid period, GCA has made available quite a few wonderful flower arranging classes online for members for free. We strongly suggest that interested SLGC members seek out entertainment on snowy and rainy days among the numerous options available at the GCA website. If you need help accessing the GCA website, please ask. These free offerings are yours for the taking.
The GCA’s Shirley Meneice Horticultural Conference will be virtual again this year. It has always been a big event, but only two members from every club were able to participate until Covid made it virtual and every member could be part of it. This year the organizers asked Cynthia Druckenbrod to do a video about hybridizing daylilies, so plan to join the Zoom conference! The dates are September 22 and 23, from 11:00 - 1:00 and 4:00 - 6:00 both days.
Congratulations to the members who received awards for their service, issued by GCA! And congratulations to long-standing members of SLGC. We appreciate all your service!
The Garden Club of America awards over $300,000 in scholarships each year to students ranging from college programs to post-doctoral work, and in many different fields of specialization.
As everyone with children or grandchildren knows, 2020 was a challenging year for students. Though many colleges and universities held classes remotely for part or all of the year, there was still a robust pool of applicants for the Garden Club of America scholarships.
The GCA Annual Meeting is scheduled for May 10 (a 5:00 pm opening party, virtual) to May 12. The entire event will be virtual, and thanks to Covid all of us can participate, instead of just two delegates from each club.
The February SLGC Newsletter featured an article that outlined the Founders Fund Award and how its recipients are chosen. The GCA Founders Fund Committee is now pleased to announce the three finalists for 2021.
You have all read about our Committee’s plans to commemorate the SLGC’s centennial year of membership in the Garden Club of America. Would we plant daffodils? Trees? Which…where…how?
In 1934, CGA established a competitive national program, the CGA Founders Fund, to provide financial support for projects proposed by individual GCA Clubs. Funding comes from contributions by clubs and individuals.
Hot off the press! The GCA is taking advantage of social distancing requirements by offering all club members a series of exciting opportunities to learn and grow.
The GCA has just notified us of the death of Shirley Meneice, a GCA stalwart whose name is on the Shirley Meneice Horticultural Conference held each fall. Her daughter sent the following letter:
Lauren Miller, a teacher of Environmental Education at the Birchwood School of Hawken outside of Cleveland, Ohio, has received the prestigious Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award, given by the GCA to an individual who, “through working with children under 16 years of age in horticulture and the environment, has inspired their appreciation of the beauty and fragility of our planet.”
Along with your Spring Cleaning, GCA has asked that we update our profiles on the GCA website. It is very easy, and a wonderful way to introduce yourself to the GCA website if you have not had a chance to visit it before. Here are the steps:
The Founders Fund Committee of the GCA provides monetary grants to projects in local communities proposed by member clubs. Each member club has the privilege of voting for their finalist choice. The winning project is announced at the GCA annual meeting. Vote at the February 25 meeting or vote online.
