One of my favorite spring and summer activities is to take an appropriate early evening beverage, grab my better half, and head back to the bee hives to watch the girls returning to the hives with pollen. Pollen is a protein source for the bees.
The GCA Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarships in Horticulture were awarded to 7 students for the 2017-18 school year, for a total of $18,500. The Scholarships, named in memory of a Shaker Lakes Garden Club member, are managed locally by 3 members of SLGC, and 3 members of The Garden Club of Cleveland. MANY thanks to the SLGC members who designated their Charitable Projects gifts to the Grosscup Scholarship. Because of you, we are able to support the best and the brightest!
What's the news? What did you hear over the garden gate? Notice any errors in the new Directory? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
Did you save your amorphophallus bulb? (Or is it a corm**…?) Is it beginning to do its thing? It may or may not be doing so — they are very independent minded cusses. But here is what you can do now:

We had a fine turnout for the March 28th Orchid Workshop, presented by our Provisional extraordinaire, Cynthia Druckenbrod. As Director of Horticulture Exhibits and Communications, Cynthia had just completed another successful Orchid Mania event at the Cleveland Botanical Garden and then made time for a private workshop for our members.
Asking a gardener to name her favorite things in a garden is absurd; it’s like asking for an encyclopedia. As winter retreats, do I say the voices of spring peepers? The duck’s eggs in my planter? The golden green of the first color to show on willows in spring? It can’t be done. But I know one thing I deeply love this time of year: spring ephemerals.

Happy Spring Equinox 2017! This is the time of year I like to check my flower beds for signs of life, and it never fails to thrill me to see the first signs of green emerging from the soil. I was so pleased to welcome the green shoots until Mother Nature decided to treat us with her recent late winter blast. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my favorite whimsical Allium schubertii survived the freeze.
Our February program featuring Patrick Blanc, leading expert on vertical gardens (INSERT LINK) was a huge hit. Approximately 300 people attended Patrick’s educational and fascinating presentation at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Please be sure to RSVP for our upcoming April 25th Member Meeting (INSERT LINK) featuring horticulturist and plant expert Penny Orr at the Chagrin Falls Township Hall.

Walking Tour of Beaver Marsh Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Trekkers are sure to delight in Beaver Marsh, just north of the Ira Trailhead, where ingenious local beavers have dammed waterways with mud and sticks and can often be spotted mid-evening gearing up for more work on their wetlands projects.
