Provisional Extraordinaire Shares Expertise
Margaret Ransohoff
We had a fine turnout for the March 28th Orchid Workshop presented by our Provisional extraordinaire, Cynthia Druckenbrod. As Director of Horticulture Exhibits and Communications, Cynthia had just completed another successful Orchid Mania event at the Cleveland Botanical Garden and then made time for a private workshop for our members.
She began with an overview of this diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, orchidacaea, of which there are about 28,000 accepted species. She then focused on the types we were most likely to own, such as phalaenopsis, cattleya, and oncidium. As the repotting techniques were demonstrated, we were able to observe and learn about the unique anatomy of these plants. Several club members brought their own ailing plants and received a diagnosis and treatment plan. The orchid doctor was both kind and diplomatic! With her combination of humor and expertise, Cynthia's workshop was a delight and we hope she will continue to share her vast horticulture knowledge with us.
