Historically, garden designs in East Asia developed distinctly differently than those of the Mediterranean basin and, subsequently, Europe and the European-inflected Americas. So I will begin this year’s Garden History and Design articles with a look at the traditions of garden design that we typically associate with the “Western World”, from which the majority of our greatest American gardens derive their style.
What's the news? What did you hear over the garden gate? Has your contact information changed since the new Directory was published? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
Our garden club year has flown by in a flash. I would like to thank this past year’s Executive Board and the Committee Chairs for their dedication, valuable input and advice, and their friendship. It is such a pleasure to work with so many talented individuals.
Lori Cohen and Judith McMillan welcome you to a plant and seed share at Judith's home on Sept. 30 at 9:30 am. Direction for digging and dividing will be sent to those who plan to attend.
The weather was perfect, the setting gorgeous; what more could you want for the annual meeting? A big thank you to Caroline Borrow for opening her stunning house for the occasion.
At our Annual Meeting in June at Caroline Borrow's lovely home, Mary Bruce presented awards, with great appreciation, to many SLGC and community members.
On July 9, members were treated to the most spectacular daylily display at the home of Cynthia and Mark Druckenbrod. Despite the cold, wet start to the season, their timing was perfect and the entire garden was in peak condition.
Many thanks to Ann and Richard Ames, and Brenda and Marshal Brown for opening their spectacular gardens for SLGC members to visit! Thanks also to Sally Roman for arranging the lovely day.
In mid-June, I was fortunate to attend the Zone X Meeting in Perrysburg with our impressive President, Mary Bruce. What a way to gain a better appreciation of our Club and SLGC’s place in GCA!

It is the joyous month of June and a time of graduations, weddings, and gardens! Garden tours abound this month, and I do hope you have a chance to visit a new garden. Let the creativity and design of others inspire your own gardens.
Beth Boles, photography chair, asked SLGC photography judges to comment on this year’s entries as if they were entries in a GCA flower show. A learning experience for all!
