I hope you are enjoying the last weeks of summer and your gardens are cooperating nicely! It’s been a lovely “Goldilocks” summer, not too hot and not too cold. I’m not nearly ready to gear up for cooler temperatures and I think most of us will agree it’s far more satisfying to dig in our gardens than to shovel snow.
If you visit my garden in summer, you will observe that I have clematis growing in every corner of the landscape. It is probably my favorite perennial and I have devised many ways to take advantage of the color, shape and dimension that they provide.
Pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils are “aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds”. They are one of mankind’s first medicine.
I don’t know if it is because I was born in the fall, or because I love to garden as well as to cook, but autumn has always seemed special to me. As much as I hate to see the summer end, the transition from humid heat to crisp, clear days and cool nights of autumn are revitalizing.

On August first Tom Rapini and Valerie Garratt graciously hosted a group of Shaker Lakes members, one daring husband, and one guest from GCC at their farm in Mentor.
It’s hard to believe we are mid-way though summer and our Shaker Lakes Garden Club calendar year 2017 – 2018 has begun. We concluded the year with two lovely and well-attended events. Many thanks to Margaret Ransohoff for hosting the Annual Meeting luncheon and Judy Eakin for hosting the Provisional Tea.

In June, Cathy Miller and I entered an invitational two-sided arrangement class in the GCA Major Show in Chicago, The Show of Summer. A two-sided design is in itself VERY difficult, and because the class was invitational, we found ourselves among some of the hottest shots in the country. Oh dear....

Did you notice an announcement of a Conservation Study Trip here in Cleveland in your latest GCA Bulletin? Here's the scoop:

I had the pleasure of attending the Zone X Meeting in early June and discovered my new favorite thing….the city of Cincinnati! The Town & Country Garden Club treated us to two days of tours, and dinner in members' homes. We visited Greenacres Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to generative farming, conservation, art, music and education. Wow!
As I write, our beloved Cavs are midway through the 2017 NBA Eastern Conference finals. The prospect of a sequential NBA championship title has Clevelanders rallying together for this unprecedented and exhilarating potential victory.
