I hope you have enjoyed this gift of glorious fall weather. What a luxury to put our gardens to sleep for the winter before the first sleet or snowfall. And how often can we empty, wash, sun-dry and store our containers in late October with temperatures still in the 70s!
For the first time in all 16 years of workshops, Shirley Meneice was absent, stuck at home in California following a bad fall. Shirley is one of the GCA’s stalwarts, a champion of horticulture practice and programs, and the greatest supplier of seeds to GCA Seed Share.
I want to thank SLGC and the GCA for sending me to the conference, and Robin Schachat who took me under her wing. As I listened to all the wonderful speakers on the first day of the conference, there was Shirley Meniece, on stage and smiling at all of us.

I cut hundreds of dahlias each week from August through October. I tried various sizes and shapes of flower cutting tools and these are by far the most productive for quick snipping. Easy to sharpen (which I do at least weekly), they make nice clean cuts which allow for maximum hydration in buckets. Their narrow handle is great for my small hands and the narrow tip makes it easy to get to the base of each stem no matter how tangled the plant becomes.
On October 4, Margaret Ransohoff hosted a Horticulture Propagation Workshop on her lovely back garden terrace. (BTW, she is the only person I know of who plants for a late summer to fall garden — most of us plant for early spring and summer.)
Please help our Charitable Projects committee find worthwhile organizations to support. We want our members to have 3 great projects to vote on next April. To do that we need your help.
Due to our strategic location in Northeast Ohio, Shaker Lakes Garden Club has an on-going conservation theme for conserving water and protecting the Great Lakes.
Thank you, thank you, one and all, for participating in our first Peoples' Choice Photography Contest! Voting will begin on Voting Day, Tuesday, November 7 and run for two weeks, ending on Tuesday, November 21st. Stay tuned!
Thanks to Carol Provan, who wanted to access the GCA website (something every graduating SLGC Provisional should do), we discovered that the procedure has changed. The following are the instructions sent by the GCA committee:
What's the news? What did you hear over the garden gate? Notice any errors in the new Directory? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
