The GCA Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarships in Horticulture
Leslie Marting
This was a banner year for the Garden Club of America Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarships in Horticulture. We received 14 applications in January 2022, and awarded a total of $21,000 to 10 students. We were thrilled to once again have a graduate student from Cleveland State University among our scholars and we look forward to introducing you to Jillian Bastock at a future meeting. Her project, “Identifying Suitable Species through Canopy Architecture and Functional Traits,” will examine urban forests both in Cleveland (Lake View Cemetery and Holden Arboretum) and Wooster (Secrest Arboretum).
As you may know the committee consists of 3 members of Shaker Lakes GC and 3 of GC of Cleveland. We owe a great debt of thanks to retiring member Diane Christ, former Chairman of the Grosscup Committee and former Vice-Chairman of the GCA Scholarship Committee, for her many years of service. We are thrilled to welcome Amy Miller to the committee in her place. Jane Pinkas and I continue to represent the Club as well.
The Grosscup is one of the oldest of the GCA’s 28 scholarships, the only one still managed by a local committee. It is a great honor for the Shaker Lakes Garden Club to have a GCA scholarship named in memory of a member. The generous donations of SLGC members who designate the Grosscup in their Charitable Projects giving make this important work possible. The students are immensely grateful for your support.
