Two Great Visits to Beautiful Spring Gardens
Sally Roman
Sally Roman, Visiting Gardens chair, organized trips to two lovely gardens, The Wolcott Lilac Garden, and the Willott Iris Garden at the Rockefeller Greenhouse.
At the Wolcott Garden, the Garden was beautiful, even if the weather wasn’t. Bob Zavodny greeted us and shared the gardens history. The original lilacs were planted 100 years ago but then suffered years of neglect. 30 years ago the Zavodny family purchased the house and garden and have been working to restore the garden to its original beauty. Bob has added and maintained many new lilac cultivars along with the existing original ones.
At the Willott Iris Garden at the Rockefeller Greenhouse, Bob Pindell, volunteer manager of the ‘iris museum’ gave a history of the garden and explained how it is maintained by vounteers and supported by contributions to Friends of the Greenhouse. Pots of irises were availavble for sale. We welcomed of the opportunity to add beautiful varieties to our home gardens.
