Collaboration Opportunities

by Nancy Linz, Zone X Rep to the Horticulture Committee

When opportunities present themselves to share your love of nature, do you embrace the opportunity?  In Zone X, what started as one opportunity quickly grew into several when GCA members joined forces with students at the Birchwood School of Hawken near Cleveland.

Lauren Miller’s 4th grade classes had been studying the benefits of native plants to pollinators last fall when GCA members learned that the class was planning to install a pollinator garden next to their school.  Mary Bruce Rae-Grant, President of Shaker Lakes Garden Club, with members Dozie Herbruck and Robin Schachat, traveled to the Birchwood School to meet with Ms. Miller and her students. They discussed the best location for the garden, amending the soil, and native plants that benefited bees and butterflies.  Collaboration between the experienced gardeners and students resulted in the creation of raised beds filled with native plants!

These same students found a Luna moth caterpillar that quickly formed a chrysalis in their classroom. Margaret Ransohoff, of Shaker Lakes Garden Club, learned about their cocoon.  Margaret has been raising Cecropia moth caterpillars and releasing hatchlings since she was in 4th grade.  She met with the students, explained the lifecycle and care of these beautiful creatures, and may have inspired others to follow in her footsteps.

Sometimes we are asked to share our passions by speaking to groups, but sometimes opportunities are far less direct and require reaching out, embracing the opportunity, and building connections.  When opportunities for collaboration present themselves, embrace their potential!
