Many thanks to the Shaker Lakes Garden Club members who designated the Grosscup Scholarship in their SLGC Charitable Projects giving. You make it possible to continue the important work that we do, supporting young scholars from our region in their pursuit of an education in horticulture and its related fields.
For a special garden project for this year, we will be helping University Hospitals create a healing space on the main campus - UH Cleveland Medical Center.
What's the news? What did you hear over the garden gate? Has your contact information changed since the new Directory was published? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
Spring is in the air, and it will feel great to putter about in the garden once again. Recently, ten of our members had an early taste of spring. They traveled to Philadelphia to enjoy the Philadelphia Flower Show. This year’s theme was Flower Power.
We are thrilled to share with you the schedule for our Flower Show, Cornucopia, which will take place Oct 19-20, 2019 at the Orange Senior Center. Click here to read the show schedule.
Thank you for your generous support of SLGC’s Charitable Projects. Twenty-two proposals were received by the CP Committee in application for our approximately $12, 000 in contributions for funding.
The Healthy Yard Pledge is the TOP Priority of GCA’s Conservation Committee this year! Please go to the GCA website’s Conservation Committee home page and read about this pledge, and how you can make your yard healthy for family and neighbors, as well as for nature!
As the SLGC Liaison for the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, I recently met up with Kay Carlson, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nature Center, and Julia Mitchell, Grants Manager. We had a wonderful conversation about the Center’s community outreach, programming, and current initiatives happening on the 20 acres at 2600 South Park Blvd. Please find a few fun facts taken from my conversation which I have put in the format of “Did you know?”
SLGC’s very own Isa Ranganathan kindly gave a 3 hour workshop to our Provisionals Saturday February 16th in her lovely home. Starting with the history as a meditative practice and offering, Isa provided handouts and demonstrated the Ikebana guidelines by creating the beautiful arrangement below.
The John’s Island Garden Club took a field trip to BOK Tower Gardens in Lake Whales, Florida. SLGC member’s Mary Susan Lyon and Sandy Holmes are both members and I was lucky enough to be invited.
From the looks of it, many of us missed the trip of a lifetime. Ten intrepid and energetic members of SLGC journeyed to Philadelphia to attend this year’s Flower Show, along with side trips to Longwood and Winterthur.

Happy New Year! Winter, with its peaceful snow, has arrived. This is the time of year I love to watch the birds at the outdoor feeders. The cardinals, juncos, titmice and sparrows are entertaining to see as they vie for positions on the feeders. And, the hopeful squirrel lurking nearby for a few tidbits offers endless delight. The garden is busy with visitors!
