Overheard at the Garden Gate

Here’s a Beauty from jennifer Hartford!
This summer I used blue Salvia guaranitica (anise scented sage) in my outdoor planters. The vibrant blue is so pleasing to the eye, and the Salvia has flourished through the summer into early fall. My favorite attribute of the plant is it attracts bees and hummingbirds. Often when I hear the twitter of the hummingbird, I look out into the yard and see him/her on the Salvia. Right now the beautiful blue blooms are teeming with all kinds of bees as they prepare for winter. I recommend Salvia as a great addition to your planters or backyard landscape.
Your $$$ Helping Pollinators Get to Work!
This post from Spice Field Kitchen tagging @shakerlakesgardenclub recently appeared on Instagram. Last spring they were given a generous grant from us of $3500 to create a perennial pollinator-friendly garden.
A Treat for the Monarchs!
From Dozie: My Balloon Plant, better known as Hairy Balls Milkweed, outdid itself this year! It is an annual, scheduled to grow 4-6 feet tall; mine must be 12 feet tall and full of showy balls full of seeds. This plant is an important food for Monarch butterfly caterpillars, but don’t eat it - it’s toxic to humans. If you want this show-stopping annual in your garden next summer, contact me for seeds - I’ll have thousands to share as soon as the weather cools off.
From Cynthia: “The little underdog ball dahlia, ‘Jackie’s red devil’ ran away with the top prize at the Garden Club of Michigan flower show!!” Congratulations, Cynthia!
From Barb Shockey: “This beauty popped up in my garden this week. I think she’s a bit confused.” Too bad it wasn’t up in time for the flower show!
