A Memory of Karen Colini
by Robin Schachat
Some lucky SLGC members have been around long enough to recall when Karen Colini served as our Horticulture Chair, over a decade ago. One of the fall-planted bulbs she championed is the native Camassia scilloides, sometimes known as Wild Hyacinth. In her memory I shall plant some this fall. You might consider doing the same. It blooms in April/May, in full sun or part shade, and is tolerant of the heavy clay soils most of us have here. It generally grows 1-2’ tall, spreading slowly to 1’ wide. The foliage disappears in midsummer, to re-emerge in spring. Here it is shown at the Missouri Botanic Garden with fellow natives Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Stars) and Zizia aurea (Golden Alexanders), an excellent mix of native blossoms to feed hungry pollinators early in the season. Rest well, dear Karen.
Design Network Honors Karen
One of Karen’s design organizations, Design Network, honored Karen with a scholarship in her name. From Design Network: “We will all miss her smile, beauty and expertise-” Click here to see the citation.
Cleveland Tree Program in the News
On September 26, the PBS News Hour aired a story entitled "Can Urban Reforestation Help Lower Rising Temperatures?" The piece focused on Cleveland, and featured organizations whose tree plantings the SLGC has supported over the years. It is clear we need to continue this trajectory! You might enjoy watching the 9 minute video, which you can reach through this link:

Enjoying Our Gardens!
This was a great growing summer for Margaret Ransohoff’s exotics: The amaranthus (left), which reseeds itself, was about 4’ tall in past summers. It nearly doubled in height this year. And the castor beans (right) did well too!
Jane Ellison had an adventure reseeding her lawn. This is how it looked one day after seeding.
Beautiful Day - Beautiful Dahlias!
Thank you, Cynthia, for allowing us to come and feast our eyes!
