A Fun Volunteer Job!
Ruth Swetland Eppig
We held two fun volunteer mornings at RID-ALL Green Partnership on July 22 and August 12. A good time was had by all!
In July our mighty group of six members and spouses repotted 66 small trees for the Cleveland Tree Farm, which is housed at and run by the RID-ALL farm. Before work Keymah Durden took us on a tour of the farm's hoop houses and the fish farm. It was impressive to see the industry in the forgotten triangle of Cleveland. After work several of us, joined by Dave (Dr. Greenhand) Hester, ate lunch in the wonderful meeting hall and restaurant. He talked to us about his Veterans' Program at the Farm and how this horticultural therapy has created calm in many lives.
In August another group of 7 SLGC volunteers worked in the fruit orchard to clean up fallen plums, and peaches and to harvest those still on the trees. We also pruned the trees and pulled out grapevines. All of us felt privileged to work with the founders. We have agreed to highlight their work to our club and stay involved for the long term.
One last volunteer opportunity is planned for September 12 in the morning. This is a normal weekday that lunch is served and we hope more will join us.
