It's Lightning Bugs Time Again!!
Jane Ellison
A lone female flashing on the ground is saying: "Hey fellas!". Hopefully you left some areas in your garden with leaves over the winter and it won't be long until the whole yard is full of fireflies at dusk.
But wait…..it might not happen even if you did "leave your leaves." If you or your neighbors have outdoor lights on at night it can harm lightning bugs, pollinators, and many other insects. Half of all insect species are nocturnal. They need darkness, except for moon and star light to orient as they search for food and a mate.
Our porch, security lights and that decorative lighting everyone seems to be installing are really disruptive to their pursuits. The research is clear, artificial light pollution has a significant negative impact on insects and is contributing to insect decline.
Now for the good news …..
There is an easy way you can help!
Switch to yellow-colored LED bulbs. (Yellow wavelengths are less attractive to insects.)
Turn off your lights at night, even in the house if you are not using them.
Add motion sensors to all exterior lights you leave on at night.
All this benefits both you and the insects! You will save energy, support more biodiversity in your yard, and the insects will thrive. Win-win-win!
