Happy Winter!
Up until a few days ago my Lenten roses were wondering if we were really going to have a winter after all. I suspect they are not thinking that anymore! Although our gardening is focused indoors for the time being, I am thinking about what annual seeds to order, what new native perennials I might try to grow and catching up on great documentaries. One in particular, Fantastic Fungi, by Louie Schwartzberg, a recent GCA national medal winner, was so beautiful and moving, I wept as I watched it. It’s available on Amazon Prime, You Tube and Netflix. You’ll never look at mushrooms the same way again.
Have you read the winter Bulletin? Margaret Ransohoff wrote a nice summary on the new native pollinator garden that we helped to fund at the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland in Shaker Heights. Also highlighted in the Bulletin are three projects for consideration for Founders Fund grants. We will be sending out a ballot for your vote soon. In the meantime, please read about the projects here.
Have you started reading our chosen March book Wildscape: Trilling Chipmunks, Beckoning Blooms, Salty Butterflies, and other Sensory Wonders of Nature by Nancy Lawson yet? It is an utterly delightful read and I hope you’ll join the discussion on March 26 at Jane Ellison’s home.
Thank you to all who completed our survey. This will really help us to forge ahead with renewed vigor and sense of purpose as we look to increase engagement in our club and relevancy in our community. I look forward to sharing the results with you next month. Regarding governance, please review the DRAFT of the proposed Code of Regulations and Standing Rules changes on the members only section of our website under the Code of Regulations button, or click here. We will be voting on these changes at our Annual Meeting, Tuesday, June 25.
Looking ahead, we have very interesting and diverse membership meeting speakers planned for February (Growing Veggies by Karen Langdon of Mulberry Creek Herb Farm) and April (Flowers in Famous Paintings at CMA), a talk on Pest Proofing Your Garden at 7 pm, March 6, at the Orange Library, a floral design workshop (date tbd) and hopefully a few visiting garden opportunities.
Stay warm and think about spring!
