Are there Flower Shows in Heaven?
Martha Marsh and Robin Schachat
We surely hope so! That would be Fantastica! And Fantastica is the name of our next SLGC-sponsored GCA Flower Show, which will take place September 8-10, 2023, at the Shaker Heights Public Library Main Branch, 16500 Van Aken Blvd. The theme is a whirlwind tour of favorite fantasies, primarily culled from literature but also from film.
Our Schedule of Rules, classes, and committees is currently under review with GCA’s team of national schedule readers, having been sent on from our Zone X chair with two thumbs up on September 15th of this year. We had hoped for a full year lead time, but this is pretty darned good!
During the course of the coming eleven and a half months, the club will be offering a number of workshops to prepare our members for entry into various classes. The first is coming up very soon – it is scheduled for October 14th at the home of our fearless horticulture leader, Jennifer Hartford. Attendees will propagate rex begonias from leaves provided by President Cynthia Druckenbrod, and the resulting plants will be shown in a horticulture class at the flower show next fall. This is a fun and simple way to create your own beautiful houseplants, and maybe win a ribbon in the process. Please sign up – it’s really a great way to learn a useful new skill.
Meanwhile, we appreciate very much indeed the many volunteers who have stepped forward to assume flower show committee jobs up to this point. Some in fact have already begun their work – HURRAH to the Staging Committee and the Division Chairs! But of course there are a few jobs (mostly happy hostess things) still unfilled. Isn’t that always the case? Please don’t be shy about offering to take on a job. Some can be done all alone in the depths of winter; you need not even be here for the show! Others are last minute small jobs – put off thinking about it until next fall! One way or another, we’d love to include you in the planning.
Please excuse us for indulging ourselves in one final marvelous vision of Queen Elizabeth II, this time at the Chelsea Flower Show.
