President's Letter - April 2022
Leigh Fabens
Greetings, Garden Friends –
Now it’s officially spring, and we’ve had a few days of beautiful weather, warm enough to get out in the garden and take stock of what’s up and what needs to be freed from the mat of oak leaves that blew in after our fall clean-up. Because I am an experienced weather realist I know that another big snow event is not impossible, but late snows don’t last. And have you heard the birds getting louder? Seen the goldfinches turning yellow after a winter spent in dark olive green? I’m only hoping that another sign of spring, a fawn, won’t be born in the shady corner of my neighbor’s yard, but if one appears I’ll lay in a big supply of “Repels All.”
News: Our own Leslie Marting has been tapped for an important job: for two years, beginning June 2022, she will be the Zone X Chair for Club Presidents! She is an excellent choice, having served as President of the SLGC and continued as a very active member of our club and on the Scholarship Committee of the GCA. There are ten GCA clubs in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan (eight are in Ohio) and the Zone Chair serves as a link between the clubs and the national organization. During my Presidency we have met only on Zoom but the Zone Chair brought us together for invaluable sharing, inspiration, and (virtual) camaraderie. I know that Leslie won’t have to be so Zoom-y but she will probably do a lot of traveling. Congratulations, Leslie, and have a good time with the job!
And for more on the GCA, go to the Members Area on the GCA website and look for information on the Annual Meeting, hybrid this year, with the in-person program limited to one delegate per club. Cynthia Druckenbrod will attend as our president-elect. Some of the programs and a garden tour will be virtual, open to all of us to sign up. While you’re there on the GCA website, you’ll see there’s a treasure trove of excellent programs available for a few clicks – sign in and enjoy them.
Happy spring –
Leigh Fabens
