Know Any Walking Paths?

by Amy Miller

I have been taking daily walks in the metroparks to get exercise and I am quickly tiring of the same routes.  With Holden closed, I thought it might be fun for SLGC members to start a list of good walking trails in our area and share them with fellow garden club members.  Perhaps members know of some trails that are off the beaten path and quieter. Send ideas to the SLGC email and we’ll post them.

Some Interesting Garden Shows to Watch

From Mary Bruce:

Big Dreams, Small Spaces. British gardener Monty Don visits small gardens to help homeowners redesign them into extraordinary spaces. All of the seasons are filled with wonderful historic, horticultural and design information. Seasons 1-3 available on Amazon Prime Inside Outside with a free 30 day trial.

Yard Crashers. On this HGTV show professional landscapers search for homeowners at local home improvement stores. They offer a two-day remake of the homeowner’s garden.

Glorious Gardens from Above.  This Amazon Prime show is a delightful tour of British gardens from a hot air balloon.

The Story of Stuff or The Story of Plastic, suggested by Robin Schachat, can be accessed by going to www.thestoryofstuff.org.

Dahlias, Dahlias and Dahlias

April is Native Plant Month in Ohio

by Judith McMillan

_April Is_ ONPM.png

With typical Garden Club of America diligence, garden club members have gotten our legislators to declare April Native Plant Month here in Ohio.  Please consider planting a native tree or plant to celebrate!

Below is a list of nurseries in Ohio that grow and sell native plants.  April is a great time to transplant and get things going while it is still cool and plants have an easier time of adjusting to new surroundings.  Garden centers will also have some native plants, but you may find more things available from nurseries on this list.

Good luck to all our Shaker Lakes Gardeners!

Nature Center Going Ahead with Plant Sale

There will be no physical sale at the Nature Center this May, but the catalog sale is still going on. It can be accessed at  https://shakerlakes.org/plant-sale/. The Nature Center is looking for volunteers to help with delivery.

A Treat for Sore Eyes!

Mary Bruce Rae Grant saw this tree burl on a recent walk in Maudsley State Park in Newburyport MA. It looks like a tree zombie!
