All the Garden Gate information from the October newsletter is contained here. Errors in the new Directory? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
With our temperate Ohio climate, having continual color in the garden through spring and summer is easy. It can be more of a challenge to keep the show alive in September and October. But even without the ubiquitous potted mums and kale, you can have a continual sequence of blooms right up until frost. There are many strategies for achieving a long season of color and interest, but here are methods and plants that work well for me.
Is your bulb looking a little spent? With all the pressure of a flower showhe may be a little weary. If he is still strong and perky he may have a friend in the pharmo/fert industry. Good on him!
One day soon, if he has not already, he will yellow and grow weary.
We had a wonderful celebration of our centennial project, Sky Blossoms, at the Hilton Cleveland on September 8th. Those in attendance were the first to receive the club’s new history scrapbook, “Shaker Lakes Garden Club: Celebrating 100 Years of Achievement.”
The Awards Committee, Ann Whitney, Robin Schachat, Sarah Dimling, and Leslie Marting met February 2, 2016 to discuss possible award recipients and procedure.
With the help of the Award Zone Representative, Pat Hinkley, proposals with letters were submitted on the GCA website for five GCA awards.
It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end! With the temperature consistently hovering in the 90 degree range, teamed up with high humidity for the majority of the summer, perhaps the upcoming early days of fall will be a welcome respite. As I reflect on the past several months, I’m reminded that both the city of Cleveland and Shaker Lakes Garden Club have both been on a roll and still gathering steam. My attempt to draw parallels between our city and our club is twofold. First, to highlight major accomplishments AND secondly to help members navigate our beautifully re-designed website.
The Program Committee has been hard at work coming up with interesting programs for the 2016-2017 season. The list here is tentative, and will be finalized soon.
The new SLGC web site and emailed eblast and Facebook page will take some time to get used to. Hopefully, with practice, each member will find that information is easily available and accessible at all times.

Greetings from the eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula! What a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life and bask in the beauty of pristine blue waters…which brings to mind “Sky Blossoms,” recently installed just in time for the Republican National Convention. Sky Blossoms celebrates the 100th anniversary of Shaker Lakes Garden Club and serves as a major landmark and public space in downtown Cleveland. We should be extremely proud of our generous gift of $100,000 which made this public art installation possible.
Summer Solstice, Tuesday, June 21, 2016, was the date of our GCA Flower Show at McGregor Home celebrating our 100 years as a garden club. Our show was open to the public on Wednesday, June 22nd and Thursday, June 23rd. Thanks to a huge team effort, our show was a great success and we should all be very proud of a job well done. A one-word theme shone throughout the entire show and that was talent! Our club has it in abundance.
Congratulations to the winner, The Historic Washington Garden at the Old North Church, proposed by the Beacon Hill Garden Club, Zone I, and to the two Runners Up, Building Sustainability at Hartford Historic Keney Park, proposed by the Garden Club of Hartford, Zone II, and The Wetlands Education Center at Cattail Marsh, proposed by Magnolia Garden Club, Zone IX.
SLGC thanks our Co-Chairs, Beth Boles and Carolyn Barr and their hard-working committee members who toiled for weeks creating such a beautiful show. It was an enormous undertaking.
A special thank you to Shaker Lakes Garden Club members and non members who made contributions to the 2015-2016 Charitable Projects Fund. The total amount contributed was $15,200, representing 117 gifts.
I am finding this very hard to swallow: I am writing my final President’s Letter to you all. It seems I had just begun, and now it is time to step aside. This summer you will hear from Sarah Dimling, and I wish her twice the joy that I have had in this job – and I have had a blast! Best of happiness to Sarah, from us all!
As you have I am sure heard, the June newsletter will be the final Newsletter which you receive in print format; the old, sea-green printing paper is gone for good, as is the Microsoft Publisher formula. In converting our Newsletter format to Mailchimp electronic delivery, e save trees while saving thousands of dollars for the club. We will finally be green. If you are among the ladies who are not computer users, however, don’t worry!
