SLGC’s very own Isa Ranganathan kindly gave a 3 hour workshop to our Provisionals Saturday February 16th in her lovely home. Starting with the history as a meditative practice and offering, Isa provided handouts and demonstrated the Ikebana guidelines by creating the beautiful arrangement below.
The John’s Island Garden Club took a field trip to BOK Tower Gardens in Lake Whales, Florida. SLGC member’s Mary Susan Lyon and Sandy Holmes are both members and I was lucky enough to be invited.
From the looks of it, many of us missed the trip of a lifetime. Ten intrepid and energetic members of SLGC journeyed to Philadelphia to attend this year’s Flower Show, along with side trips to Longwood and Winterthur.
What's the news? What did you hear over the garden gate? Has your contact information changed since the new Directory was published? Who heard what? Who has learned something to share with us? Who has a great new idea? Who loves to share the miracles of nature? It's all here!
Happy New Year! Winter, with its peaceful snow, has arrived. This is the time of year I love to watch the birds at the outdoor feeders. The cardinals, juncos, titmice and sparrows are entertaining to see as they vie for positions on the feeders. And, the hopeful squirrel lurking nearby for a few tidbits offers endless delight. The garden is busy with visitors!
So, you have waited patiently for the required 12-16 weeks of bulb chilling. Now, it’s time to reap your reward!
Remove your pot from its chilling spot and observe the bulbs – there are often yellow shoots coming out of the soil. Place the pot in a low light location for about a week where the temperature is between 50-60 degrees to slowly ease your bulbs out of their cold storage.
You’re not alone! The multicolored Asian ladybeetle (Harmonia axyridis) can be a frequent visitor inside our warm homes in the winter, sometimes to our great consternation. Introduced in to the southern US in the early 1900’s to control soybean aphids, the Asian Ladybeetles are now well established across much of the country, to the detriment of native lady bug species.
This month we are getting personal about your eating habits. Does this strike a little too close to home? We hope not, because its’s one of the easiest and most basic ways to do good both for your personal self and for the environment. Eat much less red meat.

The holidays have almost passed, the cold has settled in, and it is time to start dreaming of spring gardens and the glorious blossoms of summer. In a few weeks, our mailboxes will start to fill with the seed, perennial, tree and shrub catalogs. It is always a pleasure to dream of additions to the garden, or to create fantasy gardens with exotic specimens.
Gifts to the fund for Charitable Projects given in 2018 will be tax-deductible, this year, to the full extent of the law if mailed by December 31. Mail checks to Carol Provan, 2 Hampton Court, Beachwood, OH 44122.
Jennifer Moeller organized a great troupe of Provisional Members to plan and execute the Greens Workshop on December 11 at Plymouth Church. A lovely time was had by all who attended and made beautiful arrangements to adorn their houses during the holidays.
A small but mighty group of SLGC members met at the CBG in November to prepare pots of bulbs to enjoy in the spring. The workshop was ably led by Amy Miller, who gave us the following directions:
