GCA Scholarships 2024
Leslie Marting
2024 was another record year for the Garden Club of America scholarship program. Ninety-eight scholars will be funded at a total of $459,741. This is not only a record in terms of dollars awarded, but number of scholars funded as well. Undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students will explore subjects from marine organisms to big bluestem grasses and everything in between.
Closer to home the GCA Katharine M. Grosscup Scholarships in Horticulture, created in 1981 and named in memory of a Shaker Lakes GC member, had a wonderful year as well! We received 15 applications and funded 9 scholars for a total of $26,000. Six of the scholars received our maximum amount of $3,500. We were especially pleased to fund another wonderful Cleveland State University masters’ student, Rob Moore, who’s research is focused on the diversity, health, function and management of urban trees, and Emily Becker, a masters’ student at Kent State studying the effects of drought on two species of locusts.
And many thanks once again to the members of Shaker Lakes Garden Club who specified the Grosscup Scholarship in their SLGC Charitable Projects donation. This year $2,550 will designated for our amazing scholars!
Please read next post for a description of the 2024 Grosscup scholars and their work.
