President's Letter - Summer 2021
Leigh Fabens
Greetings, Garden Friends –
Summer is in full bloom, and it’s going fast. My own garden has not had the attention I gave it last year, when it was my refuge from the enforced isolation of lockdowns and cancellations, but it’s looking decent – this has been a good growing year for everyone.
Close to 100 of us gathered in person for our Annual Meeting and luncheon at Ruth Eppig’s on June 29. The rain held off until late afternoon, giving us time to stroll through her gardens, enjoy the view of the lake, and catch up with our garden club friends after a long virtual year. Our thanks to Ruth and to Judy Stuelpe and Sarah Morgan for planning a beautiful event! In this newsletter you will find a list of award recipients we celebrated that day.
We have a full calendar of live, not virtual, programs lined up for next year, beginning on Thursday, September 30 (a one-time change from our usual Tuesdays). Tom Wiandt of Killbuck Valley Mushrooms will show us how he has blended the art and the science of mushroom cultivation to produce some wonderful varieties, and he’ll bring samples! Look for details in the September newsletter.
In the meantime, enjoy high summer wherever you are. Andy and I will be able to go to our beloved place on Georgian Bay on August 9, when the Canadian border will be open to vaccinated US citizens. We missed last summer entirely, and that was hard. My garden saved me.
