Charitable Projects: Role of Members
Carol Provan and Sandy Holmes
A longtime successful hallmark of the Shaker Lakes Garden Club, the Charitable Projects program has encouraged and supported projects related to gardening, conservation, and horticulture by organizations throughout northeast Ohio to the benefit of thousands of citizens.
Unique to the club’s visibility and sustained involvement in the greening of the community is the two-pronged role of the members of our club. Not only do members provide 100% of the funding for the generous grants given in the club’s name each year, but further, the members assist organizations to find out about, prepare proposals, and apply for this funding. In fact, every proposal submitted must include the name of a member acting as a liaison to the applicant organization. In this way, our members can encourage and direct non-profit organizations who have a project or program idea in line with the club’s areas of interest to the public part of our website for specifics on how and when to apply.
For 2020-21, all proposals must be received by February 1, 2021. At the end of February the Committee meets to evaluate all proposals, recommending the most promising to the entire membership for a vote to select the recipient of the largest grant.
With this deadline in mind, the Charitable Projects Committee asks that you both support the program financially and also actively discuss this program with your contacts in the broader community to encourage organizations to apply.

2020-2021 Charitable Projects Donors to Date
The effort to raise funds for the Shaker Lakes Garden Club’s support for projects and programs in our community is off to an excellent start. We are grateful for the gifts that have been received from half of the membership so far, and we look forward to the process of receiving applications for interesting and creative projects to benefit the communities and citizens in northeast Ohio. We will, of course, accept donations until June 30, however, as the committee meets in February, it is helpful to know as soon as possible the total that the club can award. Thank you so much for the prompt and generous support of these members.
