Tips for Living Green 🌱

Zero waste starts with simple changes that can be easy to adopt and collectively can make a big difference in our environment. Each new habit we form helps us move closer to a more sustainable world and healthier environment. Food waste contributes up to 30% of the garbage in our landfills and single-use plastic and aluminum foil are serious threats to our environment.
There are products that reduce our trash footprint while also helping prevent premature spoiling of our food. We can all benefit from keeping our fruits and veggies fresh longer and consumed instead of pitching them into the trash. Silicone food savers that provide a tight seal are not only reusable but are BPA free, eliminates the need for plastic wrap and are dishwasher safe. They can be colorful and cute as well. There are several silicone stretch food covers available on the market. Fellow SLGC member Mary Anne Liljedahl recently gave me a set of “Food Huggers” that come in five sizes that can be used for tomatoes, resealing open jars and cans and a mini-hugger for bananas, cucumbers, etc. What a fun and simple way to reduce our landfill trash from both food waste and single-use food wraps.
