Bringing your Plants In?

Check out this article from the NYTimes from Suzy Hartford about bringing plants in for the winter, with suggestions on how to do it. The author is Margaret Roach, one of the speakers at the Shirley Meneice conference. Click here to read.

Selfies Anyone?

Check to see if your photo is in the gallery of photos of our members. It will help us get to know new members, as well as to remind us of friends we haven’t seen in a long time. Please send a photo of yourself (a selfie would work) to Dozie for inclusion on the website, or send a new one if you don’t like the one already posted.

The 2019-2020 Awards

Julie Given has been able to hand-deliver most of the GCA and SLGC awards presented to Club members last summer. Here are some of the winners. You can click on a picture to enlarge it, and then scroll through by clicking on the forward arrow. Photos missing: Karen Colini, GCA Club Floral Design Award; Judith McMillan, GCA Club Horticulture Award; and Jennifer Hartford, SLGC ABCD Award.

(further details on the awards may be found on pages 14-15 in the SLGC Directory)

A Talk in the Park

September 25 was a picture perfect day for a “socially distanced” lecture in the Village Garden Club’s cherry tree grove at Horseshoe Lake by SLGC’s own Barbara Shockey, former VGC president and authority on the 90 year history of the Village Garden Club. The talk included several references to SLGC and showcased the connection between the clubs throughout our histories. Click here to read the text of Barb's talk.

 Welcome Gift

Like so many museums, and similarly funded nonprofit organizations, our beloved Holden Forests and Gardens has lost considerable earned and philanthropic revenue due to the effects of COVID-19. Consequently, budget cuts were made across all departments, including horticulture. In response, a generous sum was raised by HF&G's Board of Directors to partially remedy this situation. In order to inspire additional giving, a challenge was presented to the Affiliate Garden Clubs to match these gifts with donations the to the Horticulture Plant Fund. Now what garden club could resist this? Not ours! At our June Board Meeting we voted to make a contribution of $500 to this fund. We subsequently received heartfelt letters of thanks from Caroline Tait, VP of Horticulture and Collections and Deborah Miller, VP of Development.

If anyone is interested in making an additional personal gift, please click here.

Margaret Ransohoff, HF&G Club Representative
